The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
