Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
