An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
