"When are you interviewing Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous fans have openly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

"So all gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will always be their top commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
